Julia "Marie" Potter

Early Thursday morning, December 27, 2007, God, in His infinite wisdom, dispatched an angel to the Sugar Creek Nursing Home in Worthington, PA, to take home our loved one, Julia Marie Wynn Potter. Marie was born Wednesday, February 8, 1922 in Butler, the daughter of the late Albert and Kathryn Hairston Wynn. She grew up in Butler but spent much time with her grandmother Julia in Martinsville, Virginia. She attended school in Butler and in Martinsville. Marie and her husband, George were married on March 26, 1941. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker and actively supported her husband in his civic and humanitarian activities in the Butler community. Marie was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church for most of her life and served for a while as the church secretary. She also worked for the Butler School District as a cafeteria worker for 12 years. She was involved in many organizations in the Butler area, including: the American Legion Auxiliary #894 of which she was president, American Legion Auxiliary # 117 where she served as adjutant, sergeant of arms, historian, secretary, first vice president and president. She was the secretary of the Scout Troop at North Street Christian Church and secretary for the Dunbar Community Center. She also was a member of the Cancer Society, March of Dimes, Butler County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Butler County Human Relations Association. She was on the board of the County Council of the American Legion auxiliaries. Marie loved to cook and bake and spent many hours experimenting with recipes. She also took great pride in her house and continued to decorate it and make changes after she lost her eyesight, by "feeling her way around." And she knew exactly where everything was supposed to be and if anything was moved. Above all, Marie loved to talk. "Ask me any question and I can answer it, " she would say whenever the family got together. And talk she could, and would! She kept up with the latest news and could tell you something about almost everything. We will cherish her memory: Daughters, Kathryn Fullen (Thomas) of Lanham, MD and Eleanor Potter-Cox (Winston) of Washington D.C.; Sons, Albert W. Potter of Butler and George C. (Paulette) Potter of Beaver Falls; 9 grandchildren, George, Michael and Matthew Potter, Thomas, Romona, William Fullen, Gina Thompson (Kevin), Shaun and Darren Cox (Tasheka) and 5 great grandchildren, Lance, Cassandra, Demetrius, Christian and Layah; and other relatives and friends. Marie's husband, George (died March 13, 2001) and grandson, James "Jamie" have been called home to Glory. Friends will be received on Wednesday, Jan.2 from 7 to 9 PM and on Thursday, January 3, 2008 at 10 AM until the time of the service at Noon at the Young Funeral Home, Ltd., Butler, PA.
