Jean R. Baxter, 86, of Butler, passed away Sunday, January 1, 2017 at Sunnyview Home. She was born February 6, 1930 in Butler, the daughter of the late Archie Julius and Reneta (Frederick) Rettig. Jean was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church where she had served as a Sunday School teacher for over 50 years. She had belonged to Maqueda Lodge of Eastern Star, American Legion Post #249 and Post #778 Ladies Auxiliaries, AARP, the Intermediate League of Butler, Women of Moose #64 and a Meals on Wheels volunteer. She was a 1948 graduate of Butler High. Jean was a retired teller from Mellon Bank with 37 years of service. After retirement, she had worked at Young Funeral Home for many years. Surviving are a niece, Darlene and her husband, Joseph Huth of Butler, her friend and caregiver, Carolyn Treme; a close cousin, Tom Rettig and other nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Baxter who died January 1, 1993; her brother, Clyde E. "Bus" Rettig, her sister, Mabel Lindt and her nephew, Clyde E. Rettig, Jr. Friends will be received at Young Funeral Home, Ltd., 127 W. Jefferson St., Butler, on Friday, January 6th, from Noon until the time of the service at 3 PM with Pastor Alden Towberman officiating. Interment in the Butler County Memorial Park.
